Establishment
The Archdiocese of Maceió was established on 25 July 1900 by Pope Leo XIII as the Diocese of Maceió, carved from territory previously under the Diocese of Olinda. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 2 August 1920.
History
The territory that forms the Archdiocese of Maceió experienced early Catholic evangelization in the sixteenth century through Portuguese colonial missions. The see grew steadily in the nineteenth century with the expansion of sugar plantations and urban centers. Elevation to archdiocese in 1920 allowed it to oversee the newly created suffragan dioceses of Palmeira dos Índios and Penedo.
Geography
The archdiocese covers the entire state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil, including the capital city of Maceió and surrounding coastal and interior municipalities.
Mother Church
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Good Voyage in Maceió serves as the mother church of the archdiocese. The present neoclassical structure was completed in the early twentieth century.
