Establishment
The Archdiocese of Aracajú was erected as the Diocese of Aracajú on 3 January 1910 by Pope Pius X, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Salvador. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 31 January 1960.
History
The see developed steadily through the twentieth century, with its territory adjusted as new dioceses were created in the region. Elevation to archdiocese in 1960 established it as the metropolitan authority over the ecclesiastical province covering much of Sergipe.
