Annaba (formerly known as Bône and ancient Hippo Regius) is a port city in northeastern Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast near the Tunisian border. As of recent estimates (2019–2025), the city has a population of approximately 464,740 inhabitants (metropolitan area around 1 million). It holds profound Catholic historical significance as the episcopal see of Saint Augustine of Hippo (bishop from 396 to 430), where he wrote many of his major works and died during the Vandal siege. Today, the city is overwhelmingly Muslim, with a very small Catholic community served by the Diocese of Constantine-Hippo.
History
Annaba occupies the site of ancient Hippo Regius, a significant Roman and early Christian center.
Early settlement
Hippo Regius was an important Phoenician, then Roman, city. It became a center of early Christianity in North Africa.[1]
Catholic evangelization
Saint Augustine was ordained priest in Hippo around 391 and consecrated bishop in 396. He served here until his death on August 28, 430, during the Vandal siege. Many of his greatest works, including parts of *The City of God* and sermons, were composed in Hippo. The ancient Basilica Pacis (Basilica of Peace) where he preached was later destroyed. The modern Basilica of Saint Augustine, Annaba, a minor basilica and pro-cathedral, was constructed between 1881 and 1900 on a hill overlooking the ruins of ancient Hippo. It contains a relic of Saint Augustine (part of an arm bone) and a large statue of the saint. The basilica was restored in recent years with government assistance. The Diocese of Constantine-Hippo (suffragan of Algiers) continues to care for the site.
Modern faith life
Algeria is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim (approximately 99%), with Catholics numbering only around 8,000–10,000 nationwide (less than 0.02% of the population as of 2025). The Catholic community in the Diocese of Constantine-Hippo is very small (a few hundred in the broader diocese), consisting mostly of foreign residents, students, and diplomats. The Basilica of Saint Augustine remains open as a place of prayer and is visited by tens of thousands annually, the vast majority of whom are Muslim Algerians who respect Saint Augustine as a shared cultural and spiritual figure. Pope Leo XIV (an Augustinian) visited Annaba in 2025, highlighting the site’s importance.
