Aksum (also spelled Axum) is an ancient town in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Africa and the former capital of the Aksumite Kingdom.
As of the 2022 projection, the town has a population of approximately 94,515 inhabitants. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1980) renowned for its monumental stelae (obelisks), royal tombs, and as the spiritual heart of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
While the town is overwhelmingly Ethiopian Orthodox, it has historical Christian significance dating to the 4th century, with a small Roman Catholic presence under the broader Catholic jurisdictions in Ethiopia.
History
Aksum was the political, economic, and religious center of the powerful Aksumite Kingdom (1st–8th/10th centuries AD), one of the great ancient civilizations.
Early settlement
The kingdom emerged around the 1st century AD, with Aksum as its capital. It became a major trading power linking the Roman Empire, India, and Africa.[1]
Catholic evangelization
Christianity reached Aksum in the early 4th century when King Ezana converted, making Aksum one of the earliest Christian states. Frumentius (Abune Selama), consecrated by St. Athanasius of Alexandria, became the first bishop. The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion (Mariam Tsion), traditionally built in the 4th century, is the holiest church in Ethiopian Orthodoxy and is believed (in local tradition) to house the Ark of the Covenant in a restricted chapel accessible only to a designated guardian.
The original church was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Roman Catholic presence in Aksum is minimal today, as the town lies within the territory of the Ethiopian Catholic Church (Eastern rite) and Latin-rite jurisdictions, but no major Catholic cathedral or shrine is located there. The broader region has seen Catholic missionary activity, particularly by Capuchins and others in later centuries.
Modern faith life
Aksum remains a primary pilgrimage center for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, with the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion as its spiritual focal point. Annual festivals, including the feast of Tsion Mariam, draw large crowds. The Roman Catholic community in Tigray is small, served by the Ethiopian Catholic Eparchy of Adigrat or related jurisdictions. Ethiopia as a whole has a significant Catholic minority (around 0.7–1% Latin-rite, plus Eastern Catholic communities), with stronger presence in other regions.
