Venerable Nelson Henry Baker
Venerable Nelson Henry Baker (commonly known as Father Baker) was an American Catholic priest of the Diocese of Buffalo who devoted more than sixty years to the care of orphans, the poor, the sick, and the marginalized in western New York. Born on February 16, 1842, in Buffalo, New York, he was ordained in 1876 and spent the greater part of his priestly life developing the extensive charitable complex known as the “City of Charity” under the patronage of Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna. He died on July 29, 1936, at the age of 94. On January 14, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his heroic virtue and declared him Venerable. His cause for beatification continues, awaiting the verification of a miracle.
Father Baker’s life combined pastoral zeal, practical organization, and a deep Marian devotion. He transformed a debt-ridden orphanage into a network of institutions that included a protectory for boys, an infant home, a maternity hospital, schools, and a major basilica. During the Great Depression he provided food, clothing, and shelter to people of all faiths. His example continues to inspire charitable work through the institutions that still bear his name.

Biography
Birth
Nelson Henry Baker was born on February 16, 1842, in Buffalo, New York, to Lewis Baker (originally Becker), a German Lutheran, and Caroline Donnellan, an Irish Catholic. He was the second of four sons. Baptized as a Catholic at the age of nine, he grew up in a mixed-faith household during a period of heavy European immigration to western New York.
Early Life
As a young man, Baker served in the 74th New York State Militia during the Civil War era, though his unit saw limited combat. After the war he operated a successful feed and grain business. At the age of twenty-seven he entered the seminary of Our Lady of the Angels in Niagara Falls, New York. A pilgrimage to Europe in 1874 deepened his devotion to Our Lady of Victory. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Buffalo on March 19, 1876.
Occupation
After a brief assignment in Corning, New York, Father Baker was appointed superintendent of the Limestone Hill Institutions in Lackawanna, which included an orphanage and a boys’ protectory. Over the following decades he expanded these works into a comprehensive network of social services: a home for abandoned infants and unwed mothers, a maternity hospital, industrial and academic schools, a general hospital, and a large farm. He financed the enterprises through a nationwide appeal to the Association of Our Lady of Victory. In thanksgiving for Mary’s intercession he built the Our Lady of Victory Basilica, completed in 1925 and designated a minor basilica in 1926.
Vocation
Father Baker’s priestly vocation was expressed primarily through works of mercy and Marian devotion. He combined administrative skill with personal pastoral care, often playing baseball with the orphan boys and visiting the sick. During the Great Depression he opened the doors of his institutions to anyone in need, regardless of religion. In 1904 he was named Vicar General of the Diocese of Buffalo, and in 1923 he received the title of Protonotary Apostolic.
Death
Venerable Nelson Baker died on July 29, 1936, in Lackawanna at the age of ninety-four. An estimated half-million people paid their respects during the days of mourning. His remains were later transferred to a tomb within the Our Lady of Victory Basilica.
