Saint Eugene de Mazenod
Saint Eugene de Mazenod (born August 1, 1782 AD in Aix-en-Provence, France; died May 21, 1861 AD in Marseille, France) was a French bishop who founded the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) in 1816, a congregation dedicated to mission work among the rural poor and eventually the most missions worldwide. He served as Bishop of Marseille from 1837 until his death and was deeply devoted to restoring Catholic life in France after the Revolution. He was beatified in 1975 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1995. His feast day is May 21.

Biography
Charles-Joseph-Eugène de Mazenod was born in 1782 into an aristocratic family in Aix-en-Provence. The Revolution forced his family into exile; he spent years in Italy, where he experienced a spiritual conversion that resolved his earlier religious uncertainty. He returned to France after Napoleon's Concordat (1801) and was ordained a priest in 1811.
He devoted himself to the post-revolutionary spiritual renewal of France, working among the poor, prisoners, and neglected rural populations of Provence — preaching in Provençal rather than French to reach the uneducated. In 1816, with a small group of companions, he founded the Missionary Society of Provence, formally constituted and given papal approbation in 1826 as the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). The name expressed their twin commitments: oblation (self-offering) and Marian devotion.
The Oblates grew rapidly and became one of the great missionary congregations of the 19th century. Eugene sent missionaries to Canada (1841 — Saint Joseph of the Plains), where they evangelized the Métis and First Nations peoples; to the United States; to South Africa; to Ceylon (Sri Lanka); and eventually to every inhabited continent. The OMI are today the world's most extensive Catholic missionary congregation, with thousands of members worldwide.
Eugene became Bishop of Marseille in 1837 and served until his death on May 21, 1861. He rebuilt Marseille's Catholic institutions, founded new parishes, built churches, and promoted the building of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde (completed after his death) on its hilltop above the port.
Pope Paul VI beatified him in 1975; Pope John Paul II canonized him on December 3, 1995 — the feast of Saint Francis Xavier, patron of missionaries.
