Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara (1869–1927), also known as Saint Cristóbal Magallanes, was a Mexican Catholic priest and one of the Twenty-five Holy Martyrs of Mexico, also known as the Martyrs of the Cristero War. He served as parish priest in Totatiche, Jalisco, and founded a minor seminary to train indigenous clergy amid anti-clerical persecution. Arrested for continuing his ministry, he was executed by firing squad on May 25, 1927.[1]
Beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1992 and canonized in 2000 alongside 24 fellow martyrs, his life exemplifies heroic virtue and martyrdom in defense of the faith. His final words are traditionally reported as "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" and expressions of forgiveness to his executioners.
Biography
Birth
Cristóbal Magallanes Jara was born on July 30, 1869, in Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico, to a poor peasant family (some records list July 25). He was baptized shortly after birth in the local parish church.
Early Life
He received his primary education in Totatiche before attending seminary in Guadalajara. He worked as a farmhand and supported himself through manual labor while studying. He showed deep devotion and commitment to the evangelization of the indigenous Huichol people.
Occupation
Ordained on August 25, 1899, in Guadalajara Cathedral, he served as parish priest of San José / Santiago Apóstol Parish in Totatiche. He founded a minor seminary in 1909 (operating clandestinely after 1915) to train native priests.
Vocation
During the anti-clerical persecution following the 1917 Mexican Constitution, he continued celebrating sacraments secretly and sheltered others while refusing armed resistance. He authored pastoral letters urging fidelity to the Church.
Death
Arrested on May 23, 1927, in Totatiche, he was transferred to Colotlán and executed by firing squad on May 25, 1927, without trial. He forgave his executioners and proclaimed "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" His body was later reinterred in Totatiche.
