Saint Albert of Genoa
Saint Albert of Genoa (also known as Alberto of Genoa or Albert the Hermit; died c. 1239) was an Italian Carmelite lay brother and hermit venerated in the Roman Catholic Church for his life of contemplative prayer, austerity, and service to the poor in the city of Genoa, Liguria. He is one of the early figures in the Italian tradition of Carmelite hermit spirituality, which was taking shape in the first decades after the Carmelite Order's arrival in western Europe from the Holy Land. His feast day is July 4.
Albert lived in the early period of the Carmelite Order's expansion from its origins on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land to the cities and countryside of western Europe, a period in which the Carmelites were transitioning from an eremitical community in the East to a mendicant and pastoral presence in the West.
