Saint Adeodatus II
Saint Adeodatus II (also known as Pope Adeodatus II or Deusdedit II; died June 17, 676 AD) was the seventy-ninth Pope of the Catholic Church, serving from April 11, 672 AD until his death on June 17, 676 AD. He is venerated as a confessor pope who governed the Church during a period of relative stability in the years following the Third Council of Constantinople (680–681 AD, convened shortly after his death to settle the Monothelite controversy). His pontificate is noted for his charity to the poor and his generous donations to churches and monasteries in Rome and throughout the Church.
Saint Adeodatus II is distinct from Saint Adeodatus I (Pope 615–618 AD). Both popes bore the name "Adeodatus" (meaning "given by God") but are entirely different individuals separated by nearly sixty years. Adeodatus II is venerated on June 17, the day of his death.
