The Archdiocese of San Diego, a metropolitan archdiocese of the Latin Rite, is an active archdiocese in the United States encompassing all of San Diego County, California. Erected on July 15, 1936, by Pope Pius XI through the division of the Diocese of Los Angeles-San Diego, it was elevated to the status of metropolitan archdiocese on April 12, 1978, by Pope Paul VI. Led by Cardinal Robert W. McElroy since 2015, it serves approximately 1 million Catholics across 98 parishes and is historically significant as the location of Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first Spanish mission in California founded by Saint Junípero Serra in 1769.[1][2]

Establishment

The Archdiocese of San Diego traces its origins to the missionary efforts in Alta California during the Spanish colonial period. It was formally erected as the Diocese of San Diego on July 15, 1936, by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution Ad regnum Dei propagandandum, dividing the vast Diocese of Los Angeles-San Diego to better serve the growing Catholic population in southern California.[3][4] The new diocese covered San Diego County, with Charles Francis Buddy appointed as its first bishop.

History

Early Development

The territory of the archdiocese includes sites of early Franciscan missions established by Saint Junípero Serra beginning in 1769. After Mexican independence and secularization of missions, Catholicism revived under U.S. rule following the Mexican-American War. The see was part of larger Californian dioceses until the 1936 division.[5]

Elevation and Modern Era

On April 12, 1978, Pope Paul VI elevated the Diocese of San Diego to archdiocese, with Bishop Leo Thomas Maher becoming its first archbishop. The archdiocese has since managed growth amid urbanization, military presence, and immigration, establishing the University of San Diego in 1949.[6]

The archdiocese comprises the entirety of San Diego County, covering 4,526 square miles (11,723 km²) along the Pacific coast, from the Mexican border to Orange County. This includes urban San Diego, Camp Pendleton, and desert regions eastward. It forms the Ecclesiastical Province of San Diego.[7]

Mother church

The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in San Diego serves as the mother church. Originally dedicated as the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in 1929, it was renamed and elevated to minor basilica status in 1979, featuring Spanish Renaissance architecture.[8]

Current Archbishop

Cardinal Robert W. McElroy has led the archdiocese since his installation on March 8, 2015. A San Francisco native and priest of that archdiocese, he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Francis in 2022 and focuses on synodality, social justice, and interfaith dialogue.[9]
