Venerable Henri Caffarel (July 30, 1903 – September 18, 1996), a French diocesan priest, is recognized as the founder of the Teams of Our Lady (Équipes Notre-Dame), an international Catholic movement dedicated to the sanctification of married couples through prayer, mutual support, and fidelity to the sacrament of marriage. Father Caffarel experienced a profound personal conversion around age 20, which shaped his lifelong commitment to contemplative prayer and the promotion of marital spirituality. He was ordained in 1930 for the Archdiocese of Paris and later founded the review L'Anneau d'Or as well as the secular institute Fraternité Notre-Dame de la Résurrection. Hagiographic tradition and accounts from the Teams of Our Lady portray him as a "prophet of marriage" who guided thousands of couples toward deeper union with Christ.

His writings continue to form the spiritual foundation of the Teams of Our Lady movement worldwide. His grave in Troussures serves as a place of prayer for those seeking his intercession, particularly married couples and families.
Biography
Birth
Venerable Henri Caffarel was born on July 30, 1903 in Lyon, Rhône, France. He was baptized shortly afterward in the same city.
Biographical sources maintained by the Association des Amis du Père Caffarel and the Teams of Our Lady indicate that he grew up in a Catholic family in early 20th-century France.
Early Life
Around the age of 20, Henri Caffarel underwent a profound personal conversion that redirected his entire life toward a deeper union with God. This encounter with Christ became the cornerstone of his spirituality, which he later sought to share especially with laypeople living in the world.
Evidence from his writings and materials submitted for his cause of canonization shows that this conversion instilled in him a strong desire for contemplative prayer and a firm conviction that ordinary Christians, and married couples in particular, are called to holiness in their daily state of life.
Occupation
After his conversion, Caffarel discerned a vocation to the priesthood. He was ordained a diocesan priest on 19 April 1930 for the Archdiocese of Paris.
In the following years he served as a chaplain to the Young Christian Workers (Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne) and engaged in pastoral ministry focused on preparing couples for marriage and supporting Christian family life. According to historical records, he also founded the review *L'Anneau d'Or*, dedicated to the theology and spirituality of Christian marriage.
Vocation
In the late 1930s, four young married couples approached Father Caffarel for guidance on living their faith within marriage. This encounter led to the first "Team" meeting on 25 February 1939 in Paris. The movement grew rapidly, and on 8 December 1947 the Charter of the Teams of Our Lady was officially promulgated in Rome.
Father Caffarel served as the spiritual guide of the Teams of Our Lady until 1973. He emphasized regular prayer together as a couple, mutual support among teams, and fidelity to the sacrament of marriage. In 1973 he stepped down from direct leadership to devote himself more fully to contemplative prayer, establishing a House of Prayer at Troussures. He also founded the secular institute Fraternité Notre-Dame de la Résurrection, intended especially for widows. Throughout his life he remained a diocesan priest.
Death
Venerable Henri Caffarel met his end peacefully of natural causes on 18 September 1996 at Troussures (in the Diocese of Beauvais), Oise, France, at the age of 93.
His funeral was celebrated in Paris with Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger presiding. He was buried at Troussures, where his grave has become a site of prayer and pilgrimage.
